How to Fuel Your Growth by Connecting with Mentors and Inspiring People

On this episode of the Dream It Do It podcast, I am sharing about how reaching out to mentors and inspiring people can totally enhance your growth.

Ever felt the fear of reaching out to someone you admire? Whether it’s a mentor, industry leader, or someone whose work has impacted you, the hesitation can feel real! But here’s the truth: the biggest breakthroughs often come from doing the feared thing most.

In this episode, we dive into the power of intentional networking—why reaching out to inspiring people can accelerate your growth, spark fresh ideas, and create life-changing opportunities.

For years, I stayed in my professional bubble, only connecting with people I already knew. But this year, I made a commitment to take action. I started initiating conversations with mentors, thought leaders, and individuals who inspire me.

What happened next? My motivation skyrocketed, my vision expanded, and I realized just how willing people are to share and support one another.

Why Reaching Out to Mentors & Connections is a Game-Changer

  • Fresh Perspectives: Talking to people outside your usual circle challenges your thinking and opens up new possibilities.
  • Skill-Building: Networking sharpens your communication, confidence, and ability to connect authentically.
  • Energizing & Motivational: Learning from others’ experiences can reignite your passion and drive.
  • Relationship Capital: Building meaningful connections today leads to opportunities tomorrow.
  • Mutual Benefit: People love sharing their wisdom—it’s rewarding for both sides!

How to Find the Right People to Connect With

  • Start with admiration: Who do you look up to in your industry? Find authors, speakers, or professionals whose work inspires you.
  • Follow your curiosity: Heard someone on a podcast or read their book? Reach out and share what resonated with you!
  • Leverage mutual connections: Ask friends or colleagues for introductions.
  • Attend live or virtual events: Conferences, masterminds, and retreats are goldmines for meaningful connections.

Building a Career Network Before You Need It: “If you just start opening those doors and creating a stronger network for yourself, when the time comes that you do wanna make a career transition or that you do wanna start a new business, you have a network in place to to help you do it.”

What to Say When Reaching Out

Crafting the perfect message makes all the difference. Here’s how to do it:

  • Be Personal & Specific – “I recently read your article on [topic] and it completely shifted my mindset on [takeaway]. I’d love to hear more about your journey—would you be open to a 20-minute chat?”
  • Be Clear About Your Ask – “Would you be open to a quick Zoom call? I’d love to learn about your experience transitioning into [field].”
  • Express Gratitude – “I truly appreciate your time and insight. It means a lot!
  • Make It Collaborative – “I admire your work in [field] and would love to hear your perspective on [topic]. If there’s anything I can do to support you in return, please let me know!”

What NOT to Do When Networking

  • Don’t be generic. Personalization shows respect for their time.
  • Don’t make it transactional. Avoid phrases like “Can I pick your brain?”—instead, make the conversation meaningful.
  • Don’t overstay your welcome. Stick to the agreed-upon time.

Key Questions to Ask in a Mentorship Call or Coffee Chat

  • What inspired you to pursue this career path?
  • What challenges did you face early on, and how did you overcome them?
  • What habits have contributed most to your success?
  • If you could give your younger self one piece of advice, what would it be?
  • Is there anyone else you think I should connect with?

The “Law of Thirds” in Networking

A powerful approach to building relationships:

  • 1/3 of your time with people behind you – Mentor and support others.
  • 1/3 with people at your level – Collaborate and grow together.
  • 1/3 with people ahead of you – Learn from those who’ve walked the path before you.

This approach ensures a balanced network that keeps you learning, growing, and giving back.

Powerful Networking & Mentorship Stats

  • 85% of jobs are filled through networking. (HubSpot)
  • Professionals who actively network are 70% more likely to advance in their careers. (LinkedIn)
  • People who invest in relationships report 3x higher levels of career fulfillment and joy. (Gallup)

Finally, remember that humans are social beings. We are meant to connect. When you take the time to build and nurture these relationships, you’re investing in your own joy and fulfillment.

If you’re looking to jumpstart your growth and change your life, start by connecting with mentors and inspiring people. It’s a decision you won’t regret.
