In this episode, I chat about a very common fear when starting something new — being worried about what other people will think. I am a former people pleaser, and being overly consumed in what others might think held me back when I was initially starting my health & fitness coaching business. I talk through my personal experience and what helped me gain the courage to step into my own and just be me.
I chat through things like:
“What if those close to me don’t support me?”
“My friends/family don’t understand what I’m doing.”
We are our own biggest critics, and when you learn what’s really important to you, it becomes easier to be open with everyone and share your true voice, because what you’re sharing is rooted in your purpose and values.
If you try to speak to everyone, you don’t speak to anyone.
I mention a quote from the book Big Magic by Elizabeth Gilbert– “We all spend our twenties and thirties trying so hard to be perfect, because we’re so worried about what people will think of us. Then we get into our forties and fifties, and we finally start to be free, because we decide that we don’t give a damn what anyone thinks of us. But you won’t be completely free until you reach your sixties and seventies, when you finally realize this liberating truth—nobody was ever thinking about you, anyhow.”
This isn’t a fear that will go away overnight, but it’s absolutely something that will come when you take one courageous step at a time!
