Using the Career Transition Framework to Navigate Your Next Chapter with Confidence

Navigating Career Transitions: A Framework for Success

In this episode of the Dream It Do It podcast, I’m sharing a powerful tool I use with many of my coaching clients: the Career Transition Framework. Whether you’re feeling a quiet restlessness, actively interviewing, or settling into a brand new role, this episode walks you through the common stages of a career shift—and how to make your next chapter even better than your last.

Let’s normalize career change. It’s happening more frequently than ever, and that’s not a bad thing. Growth often means letting go of what no longer fits. Let’s dive into how to do it well.

Key Takeaways for High Achievers in Career Exploration or Career Transition

  • Career transitions often begin with gut feelings of restlessness.
  • Exploration is the exciting but often uncertain phase of seeking “what’s next.”
  • The transition process may involve interviews, nerves, and self-doubt.
  • New beginnings can feel overwhelming—but also full of opportunity.
  • Communicating with your partner and loved ones is key.
  • High performers often crave novelty and growth.
  • Today’s workforce expects (and rewards) career pivots.
  • Each new chapter is a chance to reset your rhythms and realign priorities.
  • You don’t have to choose between professional growth and personal life—you can have both.

00:00 – Welcome: The Reality of Career Transition Today

I kick off by addressing the very real (and very normal) experience of feeling “off” in your current career—even when things look good on paper.

03:40 – Exploration Phase: Finding New Paths

This is often where the fun starts—you’re talking to mentors, browsing job boards, journaling, dreaming. It’s a lightbulb moment: “I think I’m ready for something new.”

05:32 – The Transition Process: Interviews and Nerves

The practical part: interviews, finances, new skills, certifications, and conversations with your spouse about what’s next. Here’s where emotions heighten and clarity is essential.

07:53 – New Beginnings: Settling Into a New Role

Whether you’ve landed the job or stepped into a new business venture, this phase can feel both exciting and disorienting. I share real client stories about how to keep your personal priorities front and center.

14:04 – The Career Growth Cycle

Career growth is cyclical. From gut feelings to fresh starts, the cycle often repeats every few years—especially for high achievers. Let’s talk about what that means long-term.

Phase 1: Gut Feelings of Restlessness

It starts subtly. You’re tired more often. You’re “grateful” for the job—but also irritated with your team. You ask yourself, “What’s wrong with me?” You’re defending your role more than you’re enjoying it.

This is the first clue. And it doesn’t mean you’re lazy or losing your drive. It means you’re evolving.

Phase 2: Exploration – The “What If” Stage

Once you acknowledge that restlessness, you enter the exploratory phase.

What this might look like:

  • Talking to trusted friends or mentors
  • Reading job descriptions or company bios
  • Journaling what excites you
  • Hiring a coach to help sort your ideas

This is a great time to gather information and get honest with yourself about what you really want.

Phase 3: Transition – The Nerve-Racking Middle

This is the messy middle. You may be:

  • In job interviews (and second-guessing everything)
  • Studying for a certification or learning a new skill
  • Talking money and logistics with your spouse
  • Planning for a potential income change or family routine shift

You may feel:

  • Anxious but excited
  • Out of your comfort zone
  • Unsure whether to stay or leap

That’s all part of it.

Phase 4: New Beginnings – You’re the New Kid Again

Welcome to your new role, new company, or new business. It feels fresh—but also vulnerable.

I share how this phase is your prime opportunity to reset rhythms, clarify priorities, and avoid repeating old patterns that no longer serve you.

Tips for thriving here:

  • Meet new people—ask what they do and how things work
  • Don’t be afraid to feel like a beginner
  • Be intentional about protecting your time, energy, and family priorities
  • Schedule in what matters (date nights, kids’ activities, healthy habits as your anchors)

This is where high performance really comes in: showing up fully for your career and your life.

Final Thoughts: The Career Transition Cycle

You are not broken if you want something new. Career transitions today are not only common—they’re necessary for long-term fulfillment and growth.

“Wherever you go, you take you with you.”

Make this chapter better than your last one. And if you need someone to walk alongside you, I’m here to help.
