Let’s talk about something we all think about but don’t always talk about out loud—money. Does it actually buy happiness? And if it doesn’t, how do we create a healthier relationship with it? In this episode, I sit down with Deana Jagielo, founder of Plans for Parents, to talk about financial well-being, knowing your worth at work, and asking for a raise (or asking for more time) with confidence.
Deana shares such a fresh, practical take on how money ties into mindset, identity, and everyday decision-making—especially for women balancing work, home, and motherhood. You’ll walk away with tools to manage money without shame, have honest conversations about compensation, and set goals that truly align with your values.

Why Talking About Money Still Feels Taboo
Money touches everything—from our confidence to our career choices to how we show up for our families. Yet, as women, so many of us were taught that money talk is “impolite” or “stressful.” In our conversation, Deana breaks down why money shame is so common—and how to replace those feelings with clarity and empowerment.
She reminds us that financial well-being isn’t just about earning more; it’s about understanding your numbers and aligning them with what actually makes you happy.
The Truth About Money and Happiness
When I asked Deana if money buys happiness, her response was so grounding: Yes, if it does at least one of 3 things (we dive into the specifics in the episode) The key is understanding what your money is doing for you. Are you using it to live in alignment with your values, to meet essential needs, or to give you more time? If so, then it actually does drive your happiness.
Deana shared how intentional spending can feel more joyful than restriction ever will. It’s not about depriving yourself—it’s about spending on purpose.
How to Ask for a Raise Effectively
This part of our conversation was gold. Deana walked us through her process for asking for a raise strategically—not emotionally.
Here’s what she recommends:
Step 1: Gather Your Data
Track your wins, impact, and measurable results over the last six months. Go into the conversation with numbers that prove your value.
Step 2: Time It Well
Schedule your conversation at a neutral, planned time—ideally in advance of a performance review or big project completion.
Step 3: Practice the Language
Instead of “I feel like I deserve more,” say, “Based on the results I’ve achieved, I’d like to discuss aligning my compensation.” Confident, calm, and factual.
She also reminds us: you’re not asking for charity—you’re communicating value.
Building Financial Confidence as a Working Mom
One of my favorite parts of our chat was Deana’s take on financial confidence.
That perspective hit home. Whether you’re managing a household budget or preparing to negotiate at work, you don’t have to have every answer. You just need to start paying attention and asking questions.
We also talked about modeling confidence for our kids—by talking openly about money at home.
Final Thoughts: Redefining “Enough”
As we wrapped up, Deana reminded me that happiness doesn’t live in a dollar amount—it lives in alignment. When your money reflects your priorities, peace follows.
This conversation was such a powerful reminder that financial health is part of mental health. If you’ve ever felt uncomfortable talking about money or unsure about your worth at work, this episode will leave you feeling grounded and equipped to take your next step.
